I CAN! I WILL! I AM MOTIVATED!

That time of year is here again, lent!

Lent is a time of fasting and prayer to remember the 40 days that Jesus spent in the desert and was tempted by Satan. While there are many other links in the bible to the number forty, this event tends to be the one most related to lent.

Although most Catholics (and other denominations that follow lent) do not actual fast for the forty days before Easter, they traditionally "give something up" during that time period and then break the "fast" on Easter morning. Even though I am not Catholic, I was raised as one and lent has been one of the traditions that has stuck with me.

In past years I have given up chocolate, swearing, gossiping etc etc. This year I am giving up....

SUGAR!

I do not mean the kind of sugar found in good foods like strawberries, I am talking about the kind found in candy, chocolate and most of all....baked goods!

Meghan and her sugar fast have inspired me and I think I can do it. I also told SuperJen about it and so she will be helping me not to take things from the dump bin (the bin of wonderful extras and rejected baked goods that I usually eat by the end of the day) and not to eat the edges or lick the spoon when making her wonderful treats...for those of you not on this insane plan, I highly recommend her peppermint chocolate cookies and blondies, which will personally be the hardest things for me to give up.

With my Napa race in June and numberous races along the way, I think this will be extremely beneficial to keeping me healthy....and hopefully by Easter I can finally say I have curbed my sweet tooth!

In recent years, along with giving something up for lent, I have added something to my life becuase I think lent is also a time to remember the blessings we have and to try to make the best of every day. This year I will be....

...giving myself an hour of quiet time each day. This time will be spent focusing on things that matter most and truly counting my blessing every day. I work all day, come home and run, decorate and clean, catch up on my CNN for the day and then head to bed which is not exactly conducive to relaxing.

Hopefully this will calm me down a little and make me a little bit more grateful then the current 5 minutes I work into my schedule to count my blessings (I have too many for 5 minutes!).

1 day down 39 to go! Hurrah for new beginnings!
